Survey: Which Transmission Is Preferred For Racing?

Features, Racing I By Winding Road Staff I September 06, 2017

For years there has been a vigorous debate among street car enthusiasts as to which transmission is best. Lots of shouting about the virtues of manual transmissions has been heard. And yet, less than 3% of street cars are sold with manuals.

On the road racing side of the world, things are different. Most race cars have manual gearboxes. But changes are afoot. Paddle shifting has slowly trickled down from its appearance in F1 in the mid-'90s to a few appearances at the amateur level. Paddle shifting has been executed as single clutch, dual clutch and with planetary/torque converter 'boxes. This trend is likely to continue as more and more donor cars have some form of shift automation.

Practicalities aside, we'd like to know what your preferred gearbox is for racing. Take the survey by clicking on the link below:

We'll publish the results in an upcoming issue of the Winding Road Racing newsletter.
