The World Endurance Championship Returns to COTA In February 2020

News, Racing I By Peter Nelson I December 03, 2019

The WEC is coming back to COTA February 22-23, sports fans! Nestled firmly into the late-Winter sports schedule after the Super Bowl and Formula E race, DailySportsCar.com reports that this new development comes after a bit of a last-minute change-up. The race organizers of the WEC at Interlagos, Brazil were unable to fulfill the terms of their contract with LMEM and the FIA. COTA was apparently at the top of the list of potential replacements, and sure enough our beloved track in the land of ten gallon hats was happy to oblige.

Unfortunately, the race does clash with the Asian Le Mans Series season finale in Buriram, Thailand.

This is certainly exciting news for Texans and racing fans across North America. The last time WEC was at COTA in 2017 there was some great action to behold, notably between Porsche and Toyota:

Plus, the more FIA-level endurance races in the Central Time Zone, the better.

There’s been talk of Toyota entering the 2020 WEC season with their Gazoo Racing Supra. If that’s the case, imagine it duking it out with a Z4 in GTE trim for the highest elevation on the podium; perhaps that would finally settle the Z4 vs. Supra debate. Though this probably won’t happen, as BMW has already committed its M8 to 2020 GTE duty. But still, one can dream.
