    By Bradley Iger on October 06, 2020 9:20 a.m.

After completing Driver School and a race the following day, we set our sights on the next local SCCA race: a two day divisional event at Willow Springs International Raceway. With class in the rear view and racing season in full swing, the training wheels were coming off and it was time to build upon what was learned thus far and expand from there.

As someone who has studied sports psychology, brain function, learning strategies, and more for many years, I have known the power and effectiveness of using visualization for a long time.

  • Review: 2020 Honda Civic Type R Touring -- Pulse-Raising Precision And Power (727 views)

    By Peter Nelson on October 01, 2020 4:10 p.m.

Who doesn’t love a hot hatch? Take a small economy car with great utility, add some nice turbocharged power, sporty handling, and an aggressive baritone exhaust tone, and it’s almost guaranteed we enthusiasts will get a kick out of it. Do the specs match the price tag and bodywork? Our initial thought about the Honda Civic Type R pre-testing, and after driving such wildly-fun new hot hatches as the Hyundai Veloster N, was, is it really worth the premium over the Veloster N when they’re pretty close in power, weight, lap times, and even TCR racing podiums?

Choosing a good quick release hub is important not only because it needs to function as precise as a fixed steering wheel while driving, but also because it needs to provide the ability to get you out of the car quickly and easily in an emergency situation. Here are our picks for the best quick-release hubs available, and what sets them apart from the rest.

  • Just A Casual Spin In An F82 M4 With Robert Kubica, On The Nürburgring (170 views)

    By Peter Nelson on September 29, 2020 7:08 p.m.

Robert Kubica, WRC-hotshoe-turned-F1-driver-turned-DTM-driver (who’s still a reserve driver for Alfa Romeo F1) recently strolled into Apex Nürburg looking for a car to take out for a quick spin on the world-famous Nürburgring. What followed was a hell of a first-lap out in a generally unfamiliar car, with Apex Nürburg’s Mishal Charoudin riding along; not to keep an eye on him, but rather because who wouldn’t want to ride with?

  • The Guide to Road Racing, Part 5: Getting Started - Race #1 (2893 views)

One of the cool things about Cal Club Super School is that it takes place in the two days before the first race of the season. That means we walked into the first day of race school on a Friday with no track experience and by Sunday morning we somehow found ourselves prepping to take our qualifying laps for the race later that day. Our instructor kept reminding us to "think about it like it's another practice", but that's certainly easier said than done. For us, the simplest way to stay relaxed and focused on the task at hand was ...

  • Speed Secrets: Learning From Experience (1006 views)

    By Ross Bentley on September 29, 2020 10:24 a.m.

I have been very lucky in my career to not only have a chance to drive SO many different kinds of cars (Grand-Am DP, Grand-AM GT, ALMS GTLM, ALMS PC, ALMS LMP2, Porsche Cup cars, World Challenge, Continental GS, Continental ST, NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide, NASCAR Trucks, Late Models, Midgets, Formula Atlantic, Pro Mazda, IMSA Lites, Radicals, Formula Renault, karts, etc.), but I have also been very lucky to have been raised by a professional race engineer my entire life. I guess where I am going with all of this is that I may only be 25 years old, ...

  • Review: 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition -- The King Of The Mountain (1114 views)

    By Peter Nelson on September 25, 2020 5:28 p.m.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is like the guitar riff in Dio’s quintessential metal song Rainbow in the Dark. It’s heavy, it’s withstood the test of time, has enthusiasts across a wide spectrum (everyone who enjoys rock n’ roll ought to love this song), and has been reliably getting people stoked for a very long time. We really enjoyed the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition. We fully understand why Land Cruisers are so popular, why Toyota can get away with throwing mid-aughts infotainment tech in them, and why they’re as capable as they are. We certainly hope the Japanese powerhouse ...

  • Gear Review: The Garmin Catalyst Driving Performance Optimizer -- The Best Lap Timer? (3258 views)

    By Peter Nelson on September 24, 2020 12:51 p.m.

All-in-all, we really enjoyed using and reviewing the Garmin Catalyst Driving Performance Optimizer for HPDE/track day purposes. Being super easy to setup, use, and review was a huge benefit, and being able to review video and data as soon as we took our helmet off meant no time was wasted. This could be a huge benefit for coaches who normally import data to a laptop, and then go over sessions with their drivers.
