BMW 3 Series Dinan Suspension Mods for E90/92

Has anyone tried these? I'm especially interested in Stage 1 to see if the base car can be made more responsive than a new M3 without killing the ride.

ride is compromised just a bit. but you will smoke just about any car out there. well, any REGULAR car. meaning, not a GTR or M3 etc.

BillS, what kind of tires are you using?
  • BillS
On a 3 Series? Nothing. I'm trying to figure out if the 3 Series is my next car based on this question about suspension mods.

I didn't know you didn't own the car. You should consider tire choice in there also. More aggresive tires have crisper turn in and more grip. Downsides are that they're usually not good in the snow and don't last as long as less aggressive one's. On the subtle side, there's sway bar, control arm, and steering rack bushings too. Considering that the Dinan Stage 1 is just a spring replacement, I doubt you'll better the M3's setup with just that. I would go with a coilover setup. Ride is usually better and you have adjustability. You might want to check out the Bimmerforums too for opinions on good setups. If you do get coilovers, you must get them corner weighted!! I would even get a slightly more aggressive alignment while you're at it too.
  • BillS
Yeah, coilovers seem cool. I've looked at other forums and the lack of facts and the wild variety of (often hormonal) opinions is confusing. Dinan seems to know what they're doing so I thought i'd start there.

I usually go with what the racers use. If I were getting coilovers, KW Variant 3's or the awesome, track proven Bilstein PSS 10's would my choice and there's tons of info and impressions on those.

  • BillS
Yeah, two things bother me. One is that my interest isn't in track driving (see picture for my track setup). Second, if you look at the spring rates they're all over the place. That just can't be right. But I'll check the KW and Bilstein. I noticed Bilstein has a cockpit adjustable product, which could be nice.

"I noticed Bilstein has a cockpit adjustable product, which could be nice."

If you're talking about the Damptronics, I think those are only for cars with adjustable shocks already like the Porsche PASM system. Not sure about the spring rates. Maybe there are differing spring rate options? You know Dinan might be the way to go after going back and rereading their options. Not sure if you see much difference their basic stuff though. Wow, hard choices.

You'll just have to try it. Fix the new suspension and take a trial if you feel that the car is still responding the twist and turns just as good or even better then you will certainly know that the ride is going to be smooth.

The thing with new suspensions are that they either just fit in well or even a loose opening in the fittings could mean a bumpy ride.
