Volkswagen GTI Mark II-the best GTI in the bunch?

Okay, I'll freely admit to having owned a Mk2 GTI--a lovely black 88 16V that had more rust than the Titanic--but here's the thing: I'm not a big VeeDub fan. Despite this, I completely loved tossing around that poor old, beat up GTI, and it made a believer out of me. Would a Mk1, Mk3 or Mk4 have had the same effect?
