Staking their claim in the quickly evolving sport-oriented compact SUV market, Porsche took the wraps off the new Macan at the Los Angeles Auto Show today. More than simply a tarted-up family hauler, this little bruiser appears to have the performance credentials to live up to the Porsche name.

Unveiled in two trim levels, the Macan S is powered by a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 which produces 340hp, while the Macan Turbo is powered by a 3.6-liter biturbo V6 which cranks out a formidable 400hp. The S model is capable of hitting 60mph from rest in 5 seconds flat, while the turbo does the deed in a decidedly brief 4.4 seconds. In terms of towing capacity, the Macan is no slouch either, rated at 5291lbs. 
 
 
 
Seeking to blend the versatility of an SUV’s dimensions with the sports car dynamics that are a hallmark of Porsche design, Matthias Mueller, President of the Executive Board of Porsche AG states,

Porsche Macan World Debut at Los Angeles Auto Show
 
Sports car maker unveils fifth model line
 
Los Angeles. The much anticipated Porsche Macan compact SUV, the fifth model line for Porsche, was ceremoniously unveiled to a massive international audience during a press conference at the L.A.Convention Center in Petree Hall today. The Macan was the brightest but not the only highlight that Porsche brought to Los Angeles. The new 911 Turbo Cabriolet, 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, the Panamera Turbo S and Panamera Turbo S Executive, and the 918 Spyder also took a bow to the many journalists either as world premieres or North American debuts.
 
With the Macan, which comes in two models, Porsche has unmistakably created the first sports car in the fast-growing compact SUV segment. The Macan S, powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 340 hp, can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. The Macan Turbo’s 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 400 hp and makes the car sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The 2015 Porsche Macan models will arrive at U.S. dealerships in late spring of next year, with pricing set at $49,900 for the Macan S and $72,300 for the Macan Turbo.

Update: Porsche to Bring Diesel-Powered Macan Stateside
 
Andre Oosthuizen, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America, has confirmed that the oil-burning version of Porsche’s newest five-door will be making its way to the US within the next year or so. Already on sale in Europe and other markets, it’s simply a matter of some minor development and engineering in order to ready the crossover for American showrooms.
 
Oosthuizen also confirmed that the Macan Diesel will use a revised version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 used in other markets and should deliver “about 245 horsepower.”
 
 
The diesel is expected to be positioned between the base model Macan S, which retails for $50,895, and the Macan Turbo, which comes in at $73,295 (including shipping), Automotive News expects the diesel model to be priced at under $60,000.
 
While a four cylinder model is also offered in the UK and China, Oosthuizen says that model isn’t slated to make its way onto American shores any time soon: "We don’t have enough capacity, so it’s the Macan S and Turbo and then our next priority will be the diesel."
 
As for the timing of an official debut here in the States, the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show is a distinct possibility considering the strength of Porsche sales in Southern California. Expect to see the Macan Diesel in US showrooms by late 2015 or early 2016.
