First Look: BMW’s M Division Unveils Four New Diesel Products

News I By Brandon Turkus I January 26, 2012
We like diesels. We also like products that wear BMW’s M badge. So naturally, we’re excited about BMW’s four newest M products: the M550d xDrive, M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d, and X6 M50d.

Mechanically, these cars ditch the 4.4-liter, biturbocharged V-8s of the standard M vehicles. Taking the place of the gas-burners is a diesel six-cylinder, featuring three turbochargers. The 3.0-liter boasts 381 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque, with peak torque coming on between 2000 and 3000 rpms. Shifting will be handled by eight-speed automatics in all four vehicles, while xDrive all-wheel-drive will be standard on all four models.

Under full wick, the M550d will get to 62 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds, and run to a top speed of 155 miles per hour, with an estimated fuel economy of 44.8 Imperial miles per gallon (37.3 mpg in US). Its long-roof brother is slightly slower to 62, coming in at 4.9 seconds, with the same top speed of 155, while achieving only slightly lower fuel economy, with 44.1 Imperial mpg (36.7).

As expected, the larger SUVs aren’t quite as quick or efficient as the 5-Series-based cars. The X5 M50d will reach 62 in 5.4 seconds, while the slightly faster X6 M50d will get there in 5.3. Both the X5 and X6 top out at 155 miles per hour. Fuel economy is 37.7 and 36.7 Imperial mpg, respectively (31.3 and 30.5 in American).

While all of this sounds great, there is a bit of bad news if you reside in North America. As of right now, there are no plans to offer any oil-burning M vehicles on this side of the pond, meaning, once again, that we get to watch from afar as our European friends get to have all the torque-filled fun.
