Toyo recently announced that the popular R1R extreme performance tire has been reclassified with a new treadwear rating of 200 AA A. While that might not seem like a big deal on the surface, it actually has fairly significant effects with regard to considerations like race class eligibility. We spoke with Julie Sediq, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications for Toyo Tire to get the low-down about the reclassification.
When will the new tire be available?
JS: The tires will be available beginning in January.  The transition will be a rolling change with the new 200 rated tires being sent to dealers as they are produced.  A driver should specify to a dealer if they are looking for the 200 rated tires.
What can you tell us about pricing and available sizes?
JS: Pricing will vary by size requirements and the dealer you purchase the tires from. You can get a list of authorized Toyo Tires dealers at
The Proxes R1R comes in 15”-18” sizes, and all are being reclassified. A list of sizes is available at this link. The treadwear is shown by size on the Specifications tab.
What sanctioning bodies have reviewed/approved the reclassification?
JS: With this reclassification to a 200 treadwear the Proxes R1R now meets the requirements for several racing groups including SCCA, Goodguys autocross, Optima Challenge, SoCal Challenge, Chump Car, LeMons and classes in Time Attack.
Has the R1R's level of grip changed with the tire’s new classification?
JS: Overall tire performance has not changed with this reclassification. For racers who have been using the Proxes R1R, it is important to note that vehicle set-up does not need to be altered to achieve the same overall tire performance with this reclassification.
