The Winding Road Hot List: Volume 3

Features, Lifestyle I By Winding Road Staff I December 14, 2012
As the Winding Road Showroom continues to grow, we come across lots of cool products that we geek out over, whether it’s a must-have automotive accessory, flashy watch, high-tech gadget, interesting book, or gorgeous car art. Here in the Hot List, we have gathered a few that we really like, and we think you’ll enjoy them, too.

This week brings us a winter driving school, an insane slot car track, and several great gift items.

This is the full-sized Porsche 917 replica that conceals a 1:32-scale working wooden slot car track faithful to the iconic Le Mans raceway. The precisely molded replica cowling opens like a clamshell at the touch of a button to reveal the track within. Resplendent in its handcrafted detail, the raceway is built with realistic landscaping and includes period signage illuminated by working streetlights. Dual analog racing controllers provide precise control for the 12 included limited-edition slot cars, including the dominant racing models from 1970-1971.

The Winter driving program will immerse participants in Winter driving conditions. Winter driving in the Midwest can be unpredictable, much like the weather.  Customized in-car drills and classroom lessons will cover skid control/recovery, braking and emergency lane changes on a variety of pavement conditions, which could include ice, snow and mixed conditions.

Presented by Motorsport Retro and featuring stunning photography from the Cahier Archive, the Formula 1 heroes of the second half of the 20th century are portrayed with some of the best photography from this time period. Racing fans will be captivated by the stunning images of World Champions like Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, James Hunt, Phil Hill, and more. A period look at a lost era in Grand Prix racing, this calendar is sure to please any gearhead who appreciates fine photography.

There are a lot of reasons to like this one: 1. You get a smooth and consistent anticipation of your shift point. 2. It reduces driver workload and fatigue, both in sprint races and endurance events. 3. It provides drivers with reference points for performance. 4. You get immediate feedback on cornering entry and exit rpm. 5. You can achieve consistent staging rpm for standing starts and launches—so no more watching the tach on the start line! 6. In enduro events you can manage your fuel by short shifting at an indicated point below the peak rpm. 7. You can improve your lap time consistency and get up to speed at new tracks and with new suspension setups faster. 8. Eliminate unnecessary engine/transmission wear by keeping the rpm within the range you want, without bouncing off the limiter.

Are you looking for a camber-caster gauge that is reliable, repeatable and affordable? This is the Advanced Autosports "Quick Camber" gauge. These are great for auto races or concerts. Prevent hearing loss. Constructed from metal for the best sound, Faders VIP reduces harmful noise levels evenly by 12dB. This ensures music and speech (or the song of a V-12) passes through with crystal clarity.

Sleek and stylish, the Skagen Men’s Carbon Fiber Dial Titanium Watch is a fashion revelation in timepieces utilizing unique materials in its construction. This watch kicks off with a 40mm titanium case, which cradles a grey carbon fiber dial. The dial, which is protected by a hardened mineral crystal, is adorned with silver-toned stick hour markers, three multifunction sub-dials and silver hands powered by reliable Japanese quartz movement. The exquisite bracelet is composed of a stainless steel mesh that wraps up the wrist until it comes to deployment clasp. At only 7.2 ounces, this watch feels as good as it looks on the wrist.

The 2012 Formula 1 Season is over, but you can relive it with this game. It even includes the Circuit Of The Americas which hosted the first F1 race in the US in years. Extensive cooperative and multiplayer components offer a wide range of gaming options to help you perfect your competition skills.

Randy Leffingwell is the consummate automotive photographer and historian.  His latest book, Corvette Sixty Years celebrates the first six decades of America’s sports car, covering the revolution and evolution of America’s longest continuously produced nameplate, from Harley Earl’s initial concept to the latest 60th anniversary edition built to celebrate the Vette’s 60th year. Created in cooperation with General Motors, the book focuses as much on the Corvette’s place in popular culture as it does on the engineering and design history. This book offers something for everyone who has ever lusted after a Vette.
