The Hot List: Volume 35

Features, Lifestyle I By Winding Road Staff I April 27, 2012
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. Once, we were in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

We aim to bring you a list of the most interesting bits of information we run across. Ten worth-knowing-about things that may or may not be related directly to the world of cars, but all of which we think our typical enthusiast readers will be able to really dig into. We don’t know, from week to week, what will show up on this list, which is part of the fun for us and for you.

Read, enjoy, and comment. If you happen to know of something that you think would make for a good inclusion on next week’s list, drop us a line at [email protected].

This is so much better than those weird little mirrors that you attach to your helmet. This monitor attaches to your handlebars, giving you a view of what’s behind you. Now you can actually watch the inattentive driver behind you as he’s hitting you!

Over the river and through the woods, indeed. The Argo 8×8 750HDi lets you drive over rough terrain and in the water, even if it’s a million feet deep. Can your Jeep Wrangler do that? Now if they only sold a version we could camp in, too.

We’re big fans of the Shop Vac, so when we saw this, we thought it was pretty cool. With the SpeedClean BucketVac, you can turn any five-gallon bucket into a wet/dry vacuum. Of the many applications for this hand vac, we’re intrigued that “toilet purges” is among those listed.

Science, man! Hubble telescope has sent Earth amazing images of the cosmos, helping us to better understand our universe. The telescope celebrated its 22nd birthday this week, and Brain Pickings shared some of the images from National Geographic’s Hubble: Imaging Space And Time. The book has a lot more, as well as the history of the program.

Science, man! And the science of robotics, no less. The LawnBott SpyderEVO robotic lawnmower takes the sweat and allergies out of maintaining your yard. Just lay down the perimeter wire, put the robot out in the lawn, and let it do its thing. Hey, science, get out there and cut the grass if you want your allowance.

Adidas’s popular Samba soccer shoe has taken on another sport. These Samba golf shoes look just like the original, but they are fitted with golf cleats to help you get that perfect swing. They look like a nice, comfortable choice for a casual round at the links.

Are you really picky about whom you date, right down to the kind of car that they drive? If you’re predilections run to the Mini-owning guy or gal, then Mini has an app for you. Mini Mate sort of matches you with other Mini owners, via Facebook profiles. The weirdness even extends to a question about “body style” with answers in the shape of classic Minis, Coupes, Clubmans, etc. Probably too far, even for us.

Need more bass in your life? The Digizoid ZO2 offers the full, rich sound of a subwoofered audi system from small speakers. It has two gain modes for headphone or line-out, and has a rechargeable battery. Gizmag offers a full review, here.

Perfect for communal music in an office or at a party, Agency Republic has created this novel way to skip to the next song of an audio playlist. Hang this poster on the wall, and just throw/shoot something at it to change the track anytime Aerosmith comes on.

Here’s a little internal news: this week, we launched Winding Road Showroom, which serves as a place to buy and sell all things automotive, be they cars, parts, art, games, tools, what have you. You can list your wares for free, or you can pay to promote your product or business throughout the Winding Road universe. Feel free to check it out, sell your car, buy some gadgets, and make sure to give us feedback, as we’re still in the Beta stage until we get the whole thing well-oiled.
