The Hot List: Volume 34

Features, Lifestyle I By John Beltz Snyder I April 20, 2012
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. Once, we were in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

We aim to bring you a list of the most interesting bits of information we run across. Ten worth-knowing-about things that may or may not be related directly to the world of cars, but all of which we think our typical enthusiast readers will be able to really dig into. We don’t know, from week to week, what will show up on this list, which is part of the fun for us and for you.

Read, enjoy, and comment. If you happen to know of something that you think would make for a good inclusion on next week’s list, drop us a line at [email protected].

You don’t need ropes for this rock climbing wall. If you fall, you don’t get hurt—you get wet. Aquaclimb mounts on the edge of your pool, and curves over the water, providing a fun challenge, and the opportunity to do a really awesome cannonball.

Besides having a funny name, Schiit also offers this tube-based amp for your headphones (Gear Patrol has more information). It offers six watts of power, and what we imagine will be a spectacular sound experience.

This giant fish tank, designed by a fellow from japan named Takuro Yamamoto, lets your goldfish swim around the world. Sort of. The tank is a big, transparent map of Earth. Every day is an adventure when you’re a fish.

Mimeocase makes these hardcore iPhone cases out of aluminum, with custom engraving. Send them your art or logo, and they’ll put it on your case for you. Now, they even have carbon fiber cases, which appeal to us for obvious reasons.

Is your beer lacking a little flavor, or are you just looking for something different? This beer infuser from Dogfish Head Ales lets you infuse your beer with whatever you like. Finally, we can make that spicy chicken ranch porter we’ve been dreaming of.

Who doesn’t want to control their dreams? This shows you how to make a pair of goggles that will help you do just that. The LED lights blink during REM sleep, reminding you that you’re dreaming, so you can take control. Then you can will a Ferrari to materialize in your garage, or whatever it is you dream to do.

Mercedes-Benz is branching out from making luxury cars to making luxury furniture. The collection’s futuristic looking pieces include a sofa, chaise lounge, dining room table, bed, and a home theater system shelf unit. They look cool, incorporate automotive design elements, and let fans of the brand bring their passion inside the home.

Are you obsessed with the night sky? Photographer Shane Murphy explains how to capture great photos of the ISS as it flies through the heavens. Even if you aren’t interested in taking pictures, Murphy’s collection is pretty impressive to behold.

Electric vehicles are quiet, so Domino’s Pizza in Holland created this talking electric delivery scooter to alert others of its presence. A recorded human voice emulates the sound of a scooter, and yells some stuff about pizza. It’s pretty funny, but we imagine it would get old quick.

The Padcaster allows you to mount your iPad on a tripod, and attach any SLR lens to the camera. It looks kind of ridiculous, but with all the iPad’s image capturing and editing capabilities, it makes a lot of sense.
