Tucked away in the basement of Cobo Hall, we found this solar EV version of a 1967 Toyota 2000GT. Using solar cells, electric motor, and six-speed manual transmission supplied by Aisin, this rare car is all the rarer after this conversion.
Built by the Toyota Automotive Lovers Association, this two-seat, right-hand-drive sports car puts about 160 horsepower to the rear wheels, and has a top speed around 124 miles per hour. It weighs about 3219 pounds. Energy comes from solar panels on the hood and rear glass, and is stored in a lithium-ion battery.
