"Sometimes, we need to do things just to do them." We imagine that was the discussion within the zany halls of Mini, when it was decided that the Anglo-German brand would send a modified Countryman to the town of Tignes, in the French Alps, in order for it to do a backflip. Publicity stunt, thy name is Mini.
The driver, Guerlain Chicherit, is an extreme sportsman, freestyle skier, and rally driver, native to France. He’s had a diverse career, winning the world championship in freestyle skiing four times, while netting a pair of French rally championships.
Chicherit’s attempt was the first involving a car that ended in a perfect landing (we shudder to think of what would qualify as an imperfect landing). It was also the first to be done without the aid of a specialized ramp that used moving elements to increase the car’s rotation.
